Woo’s pictures have always operated on the “pure cinema” principle. For this picture he put his prodigious staging, shooting and cutting skills to a test that won’t surprise his fans: The movie is practically free of dialogue. In his initial maniacal reaction, he’s shot in the throat by a drug dealer with slashes of black tattooed on one side of his face. The attack happens around Christmas, and once Brian emerges from a monthslong drinking binge, he shapes up, takes up arms, and marks the next Christmas on his calendar: “Kill them all.” And so it goes. Car chases, motorcycle chases, stabbings, shootings, bone-breaking.

REUTERS/Alessandro Bianchi Acquire Licensing RightsLOS ANGELES, Nov 28 (Reuters) - Director John Woo opted not to have any actor dialogue in the action-thriller film "Silent Night," and focus on his own unique visual and sound techniques to engage audiences. Swedish actor Joel Kinnaman plays Godlock, and most of the dialogue in the film comes from either radio broadcasts or police communications. In fact, Kinnaman said, Woo encouraged long takes where the actors had to improvise to create the feeling of a real fight. When Ed Baldwin lands on the moon in October 1971, he is in early middle age. By 2003, on Mars, his hair has grayed and receded, and the wrinkles have multiplied and deepened. Kinnaman is now 43, but in the fourth season, which premieres on Nov. 10, Ed is in his 70s. Which meant that Kinnaman’s shooting days typically began before dawn, with four hours in the hair and makeup chair. This is one of the myriad hurdles and minor miracles of “For All Mankind,” a series that posits a world in which the space race never ended.
